When I was 16 months old, I was diagnosed with the extremely rare condition known as Cystinosis. Doctors told my parents I would not live to see my 10th birthday. Cystinosis causes a toxic overproduction of the amino acid, cystine. Crystals made up of the cystine build up in the various organs over time.
