Andrea is a friend I met through our common medical condition, Intestinal Malrotation. She and I are both from Canada where the only surgical option for our condition is an outdated procedure called the Ladd's procedure. This surgery is effective for many people, but for those of us who have experienced volvulus (twisted bowel) it has not proven to be enough in the long term. Receiving funding for an out of country surgery has not been an easy task, and the process is very slow. Andrea doesn't have the time to wait, she urgently needs this surgery. She has already met with the surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Ohio, and he would like her to have the surgery as quickly as possible. She is currently in gut failure and hasn't been able to eat for 5 and a half months. She is receiving nutrition intravenously, through TPN.
