Full story
On Detrans Day of Awareness, individuals from all walks of life including detrans individuals, parents, therapists, doctors, and allies, have come together to raise awareness for people for whom gender transition did not help them. For many, social, and medical transition caused harm and distress in place of providing relief for gender dysphoria and other mental health issues.
Inspired by detransawarenessday.org, artist Laura "Funk God" Becker who is herself a detransitioner and advocate for mental health awareness, created the campaign and t-shirt design to raise funding for mental health care for other detransitioned people who cannot afford it.
The lizard featured in the design is a symbol of detransition as it represents species of lizards who can shed and regrow their tails. This metamorphosis is emblematic of the process detrans people experience as many have had irreversible medical alternations to their bodies in the form of cross sex hormones and surgeries. The funky elements in the design represent prospects of hope, light, and recovery from the psychological distress around gender and identity.
