I have a 14 year old son named Drake. Drake is the second of four children. When Drake was 8 years old, he began to display a variety of strange and seemingly unrelated symptoms... and little did we know, less than 3 weeks later his entire life...and our lives... would never again be the same. 

Since that time, a lot has changed. I scarcely can remember life prior to Drake's diagnosis of type one diabetes, it has become such an everyday part of life for us all... However, there have been close calls over the years, and we still wake Drake regularly through the night for blood sugar checks for fear he will suffer a hyperglycemic attack and never wake up. Drake is an incredibly hard sleeper, no matter what we have tried.

My biggest fear is that when he is away at college, with no one there to make sure he wakes up, that he will fail to be roused by alarms throughout the night, and his sugar will drop and he would lose him forever. I have done a fair amount of research on diabetic assistant dogs, trained to catch highs and lows almost immediatley and to rouse their patient or go for help.

These trained animals are quite expensive. Funds and grants to help with cost are hard to get. We are hoping that we can turn to our friends and neighbors to help us in our cause. This shirt was designed by Drake, and it definintly reflects his good humor and personality... I truly feel that having this dog as his constant companion would dramtically improve his life and add much needed protection for our son and reassurance for us as parents.
