Full story

I was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 15, and I did not how to cope. I was told not to tell people or my extended family, so I felt punished. I could not talk to anyone about how to feel, and if someone asked, I would just shrug my shoulders and smile. My biggest fear was to sleep. My seizures only happened during the transition of falling asleep. Switching neurologist did not help. My medications caused depression and other side effects. It was not until I met Leo during graduate school, my seizure alert dog, where I found hope existed and it was ok not to feel ok at times. When I had Leo around me, people asked about him, and the more I was able to open up. I soon realized people were intrigued and wanted to learn more or would talk about loved ones with epilepsy. I no longer felt alone and now wanted to bring the community together to raise awareness--a medical condition that is silent, but is real. March 26th is Epilepsy Awareness Day, so help me bring hope and positivty!
