Guillain-Barre Syndrome and it's lifelong counterpart, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, are devestating neurological disorders that affect the nerves in your body.
The immune system attacks your nervous system, and "eats" away at the myelin sheath on the nerve cell. Because the is no insulation to transmit the electric signals from the brain to the nerve, the signal gets lost in the body. This results in paralysis, pain, and other physiological issues for the patients effected.
GBS is incredibly rare, with fewer than 20,000 cases per year. Severe, early symptoms of GBS csignificantly increases the likelihood of long term complications. Generally, death is rare with GBS and is a result of RDS (respiratory distress syndrome) or heart attack.
