I’m participating in Ms. Veteran America. This is a competition that raises money for homeless women Veterans that need assistance finding reliable shelter for them (and sometimes their children)
When you think of the word homeless, most people think of a scruff old man on the side of the road. What about the 26-year-old-woman living out of her car with 2 children? Or the 30-year-old woman couch surfing?
There have been VA facilities that have turned away women veterans from shelters with vacancies because of their sex. All male shelters will NOT accept women so to avoid having to deal with any lawsuits or complications that will arise with having mixed company.
There are numerous reasons that women are on the streets today:
-PRIDE is one of the biggest reasons. For a veteran to ask for help is almost impossible.
-coming from the workforce that literally tells you when to use the restroom…to now kicks you out and says “Good luck!” The transition isn’t long enough or good enough.
-Don’t make enough money for that kind of transition.
-end up living on someone’s couch. (still technically homeless…NOT their own home)
-PTSD
-Sexual trauma and NOT wanting to go to a shelter.
$25 a day will get a woman fed, showered, clothed, and a good bed for one day. Women veteran are the fastest growing homeless population in America. Over half of them are single mothers.
