Many people are already well aware of the increasing number of species becoming endangered or extinct in the past few years. More specifically, the rhino species is highly endangered, and although many know this, they do not know how to help, or how extreme the issue is. According to the Rhino Recovery fund., aka RRF, only 25,000 rhinos remain in Africa and Asia combined. Three of five remaining rhino species are critically endangered (black, Javan, and Sumatran), and the white rhino subspecies was confirmed as extinct in the wild in 2018. In 2008, the black and white rhino subspecies were claimed to be recovered after nearly disappearing from the planet. However, poaching in rhino wildlife has been putting these animals’ lives at risk for over a century at least, and our efforts need to be increased rapidly. In the past 10 years, over 7100 rhinos have been killed due to poaching. The horns contain keratin (a protein) that is used in Asian medicine as a “cure” to many ailments. However, a rhino horn is unfortunately also seen as a status symbol. As human populations and infrastructure grow, rhino populations are suffering with habitat loss and fragmentation. RRF is an organization dedicated to the recovery of rhinos and funding efforts aimed at putting a stop to rhino poaching, ending demand for their horns, making them relevant to the societies that live with them, as well as protecting natural rhino habitats. 100% of the donations RRF receives are used to restore healthy rhino populations, especially in the wild. The Rhino Recovery Fund. Is paired with 23 other partners throughout 10 countries in effort to help the populations in Africa and Asia. They have about 26 projects in action and are one of the most effective organizations for rhino recovery.
