Full story

Gracie Mae was born to Heather and Robert Peterson, in October of 2011 with a very rare condition called Fibular Hemimelia (FH). This condition is estimated to affect only 1 in 40,000-50,000 people, worldwide. No two cases are identical and her careplan changes each time she is seen by her doctor. In Gracie's case, it has caused her right leg to be vastly shorter than the left, the foot/heel and joints of the affected leg need reconstructing and she is missing many tendons and ligaments as well as half of her foot and 2 toes.  Initially, doctors told the parents the standard protocol for treatment was amputation. The family researched the condition and various treament possibilities and found a doctor in Baltimore, MD who specializes in treating children with this condition. While some families affected by FH do choose amputation, Heather and Robert were told that Gracie had a good and strong leg and her condition was one that supported reconstruction and lengthening and that was their choice. Gracie had her first surgery just prior to turning 1 and has gone through 8 additional ones to date. She is now preparing for her 10th surgery which could be quite extensive:  They will be placing metal plates above and possibly below her knee to help drive the growth in the correct position, remove a screw from her ankle, possible Osteotomy and repositioning of her ankle and one of her foot, cleaning up scar tissue, and shaving and contouring her ankle bone, along with wires in her foot to hold everything in place while it heals and a cast.  This next surgery was just decided after an enormous growth spurt Gracie had between June and September of this year and found the family completely unprepared after experiencing the last two years surgery free. This was the first two years with no surgeries in her short life.  Robert is a highschool teacher and Boy's Basketball coach in Arizona and Heather works as the administrative secretary at a Christian school. They both are hard working parents trying to make ends meet, just like most of everyone else. However, one big difference than many people is the added expense of all of Gracie's surgeries, travel expenses, lifts, braces, physical therapy, etc.  Please consider donating and sharing so that her parents can focus more on Gracie's care rather than worrying about being able to afford to cover her needs.  If you would like to follow Gracie on her journey with FH, you can follow her on Twitter @SeeGracieRun or her mom's blog at www.formedbyGod.blogspot.com or her facebook group of See Gracie Run. You can also donate to https://www.youcaring.com/heatherpeterson-940412.
