Design for Difference is the global theme for 2019. As designers, we are responsible for creating worlds of experiences, environments, services, and systems that impact millions of people – with lasting impacts. While we don’t have a Hippocratic Oath, it’s important for us to follow a similar goal to“do good” and“do no harm.” It is our responsibility as IAs to consider the consequences and impact our design decisions have on humanity and society as a whole. Research is a foundational step in the design process. It ensures that we understand and account for diverse user needs within communities, both in our own domains and globally.
How do we as information architects and designers design for this difference? What is this difference that we’re designing for? How can we better understand it and become more engaged and mindful for our different and diverse users? How might we communicate this understanding to others and provide more meaning and depth?
This year’s theme design was created by , a“idea-visualization” student club at Purdue University. Their inspiration for this design came from the understanding that everyone is different and that empathy is essential to design.

Let's build communities together.
Be part of a global gathering for information architecture. Information architecture should be a skill-set more people have access to. World IA Day has provided accessible IA education to over 13,000 participants in more than 12 languages since 2012.
About World IA Day
World Information Architecture Day is a yearly event, dedicated to the empowerment of local leaders, supported by the Information Architecture Institute, a nonprofit(501c6) organization of volunteers. Our singular focus is to make the world's information clearer and easier to use by improving how people learn, practice and teach information architecture(IA).
Our celebrations inspire the global growth of information architecture as a community of practice and we value diverse thoughts and thinkers in our celebrations. World IA Day is jointly produced by a network of global, regional, and local volunteers with support from the Information Architecture Institute.
