Zachary’s Fight...A PBS Warrior
Hi! I’m Zachary. I was born with a very rare disease called Prune Belly Syndrome. It is so rare that it only occurs about 1/40,000 live births. 50% of us wont live past our 2nd birthday. I was born in March of 2018. I spent most of the first year of my life inpatient at Lurie’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL. I’m currently scheduled for my 8th surgery in November and I’m in need of a kidney transplant.
The cost of a kidney transplant after insurance can run anywhere from $33,500 to $143,000. After surgery i will need anti rejection meds for the rest of my life and they run about $17,000 a year.
Hi! I’m Amanda Vossoughi. I am a single mom to 2 boys...Samuel who is 4 and Zachary who is 18 months. I lost my full time job missing too much work last winter while Zachary was on life support in a coma for 2 months with RSV. I currently work 2 part-time jobs. Zachary’s compromised immune system does not allow him to go to any type of daycare. He only leaves the house to go to drs appointments or to be admitted into the hospital.
Preparing for a transplant requires numerous trips to Chicago from our home in Rockford. It’s 170 miles round trip and with tolls and parking each trip costs about $100.
When Zachary is released after his transplant we will need to live in downtown Chicago for 6-8 weeks to be closely monitored by the team.
