Closing Gaps, Opening Minds
An unfortunate reality of contemporary society is that differences often divide rather than unite us. Race, religion, gender and political affiliation are used to drive a wedge between us when they should be used as opportunities to learn. The result too often is distrust, which fuels rancor which denigrates the quality of discourse which deepens the divide and creates a vicious cycle. Inequality is allowed to persist and it becomes worse than poor form.
However, it doesn’t help to allow the worst examples of humanity to define us. If you believe (as we do) there is an immense global population of people who are genuinely well intentioned, buy a shirt and let the world know it. We hope to start a movement. A wink of approval wouldn’t be too bad would it?
Sports and creative pursuits offer examples of humanity bridging gaps and focusing on the journey and the outcome. If they can throw, they can throw. If they can jam, they can jam. If they make great art . . .
Humanitarian gestures are important. Let’s use the universality of these symbols to help acknowledge common interest as a starting point to even healthier understanding, even more respect.
Thanks for kickstarting a face-to-face social network movement!
