Giving Back Program: September 2014

This month's cause: Supporting Anti-Bullying & Safe Schools for LGBT Youth

Giving Back to a top organization that works to provide safe schools for all students - Gay or Straight.

The start of another school year isn't necessarily a highly anticipated event for many students, especially for those that may be considered different by their peers because of their sexual orientation.

This month, we're giving back to an organization that works hard to ensure a safe and supportive school environment for all students whether they're gay or straight. We've designed a limited edition t-shirt, that will go on sale next week, to help support one of the top organizations dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students.

While in recent years there has been a slight decline in hateful language, bullying and lgbt victimization, overall harrassment remains high.

Accept and Respect t-shirt to support anti-bullying for all students - gay or straight.

Here are a few key findings from one in-depth study:

  • 6 in 10 LGBT students reported feeling unsafe at a school because of their sexual orientation; 4 in 10 reported feeling unsafe at a school because of how they expressed their gender.
  • Sexual orientation and gender expression were the most common reasons LGBT students were harassed or assaulted at school.
  • LGBT students reported most commonly avoiding school bathrooms and locker rooms because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable in those spaces.
  • Less than half of LGBT students attended a school that had a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) or similar student clubs that addressed LGBT issues in education.

Proceeds of our limited edition t-shirt sale will go to the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students. They are dedicated to ensuring that every member of every school community is valued, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. This organization works hard to ensure that LGBT students are free from bullying and harassment and have the support they need to safely learn and grow.

Help us as we support the fight to stop bullying. Our exclusive t-shirt will go on sale on Friday, September 12th.

How our Giving Back Program works:

Each month, INK donates 10¢ of every single shirt that is sold through the site toward a monthly featured cause. Since October 2013, we have donated over $6,000.00 to various causes through our Giving Back Program.
